Scots get ready for New York City Tartan Day Parade

SCOTTISH companies are getting ready to support the New York City Tartan Day Parade.

It’s 25 years since the United States’ Senate declared 6 April to be “National Tartan Day”.

Now, ScotlandShop and Bross Bagels are each supporting events in the Big Apple to mark the anniversary.

This year, ScotlandShop – which is already the National Tartan Day New York Committee’s merchandise partner – is sponsoring the “Dog Pack” in the parade down 6th Avenue.

“These dogs are real publicity hounds,” said the organisers.

“Exquisitely dressed and camera-ready, those wearing their finest tartan apparel get to compete [for] the ‘Best-Dressed Tartan Dog’ prize, sponsored this year by ScotlandShop.

“One winner from each category will be determined by the parade grand marshal.

“The reward: a ScotlandShop tartan doggie gift bag and eternal glory.”

Tartan Day - Bross Bagels

Meanwhile, Edinburgh-based Bross Bagels is teaming up again with Alan Cumming, following last summer’s special-edition Fringe bagel created in partnership with the actor.

Founder Larah Bross will join Cumming to host a “New York City Tartan Week Parade Hangover Brunch” at the New York’s Club Cumming on 16 April, along with Scottish cabaret acts.

Bross said: “Our event offers up a chance to cure your hangover the Celtic way – a chance for NYC Tartan Day Parade goers to sample Scotland’s best bagels.

“We will even be giving guests the chance to peek up the kilt of some of the best Scottish cabaret – Club Cumming style.”

Cumming added: “In the tradition of selling coals to Newcastle, I am so excited that Bross Bagels will be bringing their legendary bagels to Club Cumming.”

New York City Tartan Day Parade - Joy Dunlop

Music will also be on the menu for New York City Tartan Week.

Gaelic singer and BBC weather forecaster Joy Dunlop will host the city’s first Mòd.

The two-day event will be held in association with An Comunn Gàidhealach, which organises the Royal National Mòd.

Singers from Scotland and North America will compete in the competition at The Tailor Public House on 13 April.
