A trip doon the watter that may float your boat

The west of Scotland sense of humour is a creature in its own right.

And if you’re a fan of the likes of Tony Roper and Dorothy Paul, the Kerryoans up the Clyde! is definitely the book for you.

This book, illustrated by Bob Dewar, recounts the adventures of a vessel full of character with a captain to match: Morrison’s Waverly and ‘Big Lizzie’, who are are each as formidable and inalienably Scottish as the other.

The writer captures the charmingly unique spirit of the last of the Clyde’s paddle steamers as well as the facts of its history.

You’ll find trips up and doon the watter, as Lizzie and her crew encounter larger than life characters, most of whom seem somehow familiar, such is the author’s ability to capture the characteristics of real life people, and combine them into people we’ll most likely recognise.

Allan Morrison is a prolific author whose previous books include Goanae No Dae That, Last Tram Tae Auchenshuggle, Haud ma Chips Ah’ve Drapped the Wean, Naw First Minister, Haud that Bus and Should’ve Gone Tae Specsavers, Ref!, all of which reflect that Weegie wit.

Kerryoans up the Clyde!, by Allan Morrison, published by Luath Press, £7.99.
