Live the Outlander lifestyle in historic castle

A beautiful Scots castle, which looks like it would be at home in cult TV series Outlander, is opening its doors to the public – for £1200 per night.

For nearly 70 years one of Scotland’s most historic castles, the 12th century Old Castle of Rowallan, has been largely closed off to the public. Until thus weeky.

Now, owners of one of the finest specimens of Renaissance castle architecture in Scotland will quite literally hand over the keys to the castle, via Airbnb, giving guests the chance to live like true Lords and Ladies.

The striking castle, which sleeps up to eight people and costs just £1200 per night (£150 per person), offers guests access to their own private chefs, as well as falconry, clay pigeon shooting, whisky tastings and even a 19-hole Championship golf course on the estate.

Guests channelling their inner Jamie or Claire Fraser should make sure they book in November, so they can enjoy the new series of Outlander in true medieval style.

Recently refurbished to its former glory by the current owners, The Campbells, the castle is nestled in the heart of the Rowallan estate, just half an hour from Glasgow. The ancestral home of the Mures and the Campbells, its original ruins date back to 1120.

Steeped in history, the ancient castle comes complete with plenty of interesting tales – and a few ghost stories – inspiring many legends that have been passed on throughout the centuries.

It is said to have been the birthplace of Elizabeth Mure, who married the High Steward and Guardian of Scotland – who later became King Robert II of Scotland. The Campbell family, who live close by, are more than happy to exchange stories with visitors to their castle.

Niall Campbell of Rowallan Castle Estate said: ‘We’ve spent many years ensuring the Old Castle is refurbished to its original glory, so guests get a truly authentic experience fit for a king – albeit with some of the added modern comforts we’ve come to expect in the 21st century!

‘It’s the first time we’ve been able to fully open our doors to the public, and the first opportunity to allow guests to stay, so we’re incredibly excited to list the castle on Airbnb. Who will be first to be King of the castle?’

The entire castle is now available to rent via Airbnb. For £1,200 per night, guests can enjoy:

Private use of the castle;

Four double bedrooms to choose from, and the option to turn two into twin rooms;

Fully modern, deluxe bathrooms – there’s nothing medieval about these!;

Luxurious bathrobes and Arran Aromatics toiletries – only the finest for Rowallan’s distinguished VIPs;

A fully functioning kitchen and a grand dining room to allow guests to eat like royalty.

If you don’t fancy cooking for yourself, you can arrange for Rowallan’s renowned chefs to deliver food right to your door.

Rowallan also features an outstanding Colin Montgomerie designed championship golf course and two superb castles that help make it one of Ayrshire’s most exclusive wedding venues, along with a restaurant that’s fast becoming one of Ayrshire’s favourites.
