Macallan names artisan apprentice firms

WHISKY maker The Macallan is helping four craft businesses to hire apprentices.

The distiller is giving the companies grants from its £260,000 artisan apprenticeship fund.

The money is going to Scottish trio Alexander Manufacturing, Glasstorm, and Powderhall Bronze, and to London-based Shepherds Bookbinders.

The Macallan created the fund in 2021 to help “preserve and safeguard legacy crafts, trades, skills, and values to support employment for generations to come”.

Cash for the fund came through the sale of “The Reach”, an 81-years-old single malt and the oldest whisky released by the distillery.

North Lanarkshire-based coat maker Alexander Manufacturing will hire four apprentices thanks to the cash, while Tain-based glass studio Glasstorm will take on an apprentice too.

Powderhall Bronze in Musselburgh will train two apprentices, with Shepherds Bookbinders training one of its existing members of staff.

Head of insight and sustainability Elizabeth McMillan said: “Dedication to creativity, craftsmanship, innovation, and collaboration are a key part of our brand DNA, and – through The Macallan Artisan Collective and Artisan Apprenticeship Fund – we aim to establish a legacy of positive action by fostering meaningful progress for our key communities through partnerships, collaborations, and fundraising.

“Preserving and safeguarding legacy crafts, trades, skills, and values is an essential part of this, to help support employment for generations to come.

“We’re proud to play a part in training and guiding the next generation of artisans throughout Scotland and beyond.”
