Let them eat cake – in the form of Perth’s famous landmarks

A Scottish city’s famous landmarks are being recreated in cake.

This Sunday (November 19), as part of the Perth Festive Feast, Perth and Kinross and dozens of its locations are being made in cake form and will be on display at Horsecross Plaza before being cut up and handed out to be enjoyed.

A total of 36 groups of community bakers have volunteered to take part and have each picked a landmark building or place from across Perth and Kinross, they are recreating it in cake form to feature on a fully edible map of the region, which is being built by Head Baker Simon Preston.

Some of the landmarks being made include Smeaton’s Bridge, Perth Concert Hall, McDiarmid Park, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Loch Leven Castle and the Beatrix Potter Garden.

Two Perth baking fans, Claire and Louise, decided to team up and tackle the Fergusson Gallery.

Claire said: ‘Louise and I decided to have a go at Cake Fest as we both enjoy baking and although we were not overly confident that we could do justice to any of Perth’s landmarks we decided to give it a try. It’s been such a lot of fun working with Louise and learning new techniques.’

Head baker Simon added: ‘It has been wonderful meeting so many local people with a passionate enthusiasm for Perth and Kinross. The response has been phenomenal and our volunteer bakers are really rising to the challenge.

‘They’ve already spent hours designing and baking their cakes and are now gearing up for a busy weekend adding all the decorations; windows, statues, turrets, porticos, gardens, roof tiles and much more. It’s going to be an absolutely spectacular visual and edible feast.’
