Culture, music, language and storytelling

The opening of Aberdeenshire’s Across the Grain festival is almost upon us, showcasing some of the nation’s best known cultural institutions on the opening weekend alone.

The National Theatre of Scotland will premiere a new film in Huntly and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland will choreograph solo, duets and group dance work for Banff residents, demonstrating the significance of this emerging festival.

In Stonehaven, a showcase concert will feature music from the folk tradition and worlds beyond, with performances from award-winning Aberdeenshire musician Iona Fyfe, by Hanka Wojciak and Pawel Haranczyk from Poland, and The Melting Pot Fusion Band, Northeast-based musicians who play an eclectic range of music inspired by cultures across the world.

This special evening is a partnership between Live Life Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen Multicultural Centre and the Polish Association Aberdeen.

A large and varied programme of events for all ages is taking place in communities across Aberdeenshire throughout October, with many free to attend and some events are already fully booked.

There are contributions from local musicians, storytellers, award-winning performers, composers, choreographers and singers.

As well as scheduled events at local venues, there will also be a variety of pop-up performances, from country dance sessions in community centres to young musicians busking at local farmer’s markets.

The festival is supported by local community groups, arts organisations, arts partners, academics and students who have all come together around a shared love of the Doric culture and language, and the north east’s musical roots.

Last year’s inaugural festival got off to a really strong start, highlighting the uniqueness of the north east and attracting locals and visitors alike to around 50 events.

The desire to celebrate collectively what Aberdeenshire has to offer culturally has led to this year’s programme increasing significantly, showcasing the best the region has to offer, with some performances created specially for the festival.
