This winter, Scotland’s historic Belhaven Brewery in Dunbar is partnering with the talented culinary team at nearby Archerfield to stage the Belhaven x Archerfield Winter Sessions: a new event series celebrating the best of East Lothian beer and food.
I was lucky enough to sample the event in the magical setting of Belhaven Brewery, after hours. We were warmly welcomed to Belhaven and sipped on a glass of 80 shilling before taking a wee guided wander through the brewery. Belhaven is Scotland’s oldest brewery and it’s hard to comprehend that there has been beer brewed at this site for over 300 years. It’s a windy evening so we’re delighted to head up to the brewery’s Monks Retreat bar to enjoy a range of award-winning Belhaven beers and Archerfield Executive Chef Dave Jamieson’s modern take on the traditional bar snack.
Our tasting experience consisted of four Belhaven beers, each featuring a different style and flavour, perfectly paired with four luxurious bar snacks from Archerfield’s delicious new winter menu, which is packed with seasonal flavour and locally sourced ingredients. Step aside questionable peanuts and greasy pork scratchings. These are certainly bar snacks like I’ve never experienced before. Not to give away too much, we enjoyed something fishy, something gamey, something for surf n’ turf fans and a pud too.
Archerfield House, East Lothian.
Deciding to make an evening of it, I had the pleasure of an overnight stay in one of the Pavilion Suites at Archerfield. Located just by the impressive Mansion House, the suites are huge and well-equipped and the estate itself is a paradise for golfers and spa fans too. The morning brought more culinary delights with breakfast at the Clubhouse Restaurant. There’s a great choice of hot and cold buffet food on offer, but I treated myself to a glorious Eggs Benedict before it was time to head for home.
