Hansel and Gretel in a ballet for the wee ones

Scottish Ballet will take its specially adapted wee version of a big ballet, Wee Hansel & Gretel, on the road this summer.

Scottish Ballet is delighted to be supported on the 2019 Wee Hansel & Gretel tour by Loganair, Scotland’s national airline. Following the success of the partnership in 2018, Loganair are flying the dancers, and the support teams to stage this family show all across Scotland.

Kay Ryan, commercial director, Loganair, said: ‘Our partnership with Scottish Ballet on their Highland Fling tour last year was an undoubted success, and this latest sponsorship further emphasises Loganair’s commitment to supporting the local communities we serve in the Highlands and Islands by helping to deliver thrilling live performances from Scotland’s national dance company.’

Christopher Hampson, CEO/Artistic Director, Scottish Ballet said: ‘This ballet is close to my heart, so I am delighted to share this specially adapted show with young children across Scotland. It is full of dancing and storytelling, plucky characters and a happy ending – perfect for experiencing the magic of live performance.’

Northlink Ferries are supporting the east coast dates that include the Orkney, Shetland and Aberdeen leg of the tour. Nortlink previously supported Scottish Ballet’s 2018 tour of Highland Fling and are delighted to be partnering with Scotland’s national dance company in bringing a children’s show to their local communities – the perfect introduction to ballet for wee ones.

Audiences will join Hansel &; Gretel as they go on an adventure deep into the woods… Along the way they’ll meet a rather beguiling Witch and her mysterious raven, before arriving in an enchanted gingerbread house filled with dancing sweet treats and toys that come to life.

This specially adapted 50-minute show is the perfect way for young children aged 3–8 years and their families to discover the magic of ballet.

Based on the full-length ballet choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s CEO/artistic director Christopher Hampson in 2013, dancers from Scottish Ballet will perform in this family fairytale alongside talented students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s BA in Modern Ballet.

Scottish Ballet is delighted to announce that one of the RCS students taking part, Fife-born Hannah Cubitt, will go on to join the main company of dancers in September 2019. New to this tour, the performance will be introduced by actor and musician, James Siggins, who graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2016 and will perform in the role of Narrator.

With colourful set and costumes designed by Gary Harris, Wee Hansel & Gretel will be performed to the music of Engelbert Humperdinck, recorded live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.

This tour of Wee Hansel & Gretel has been adapted for a family audience, with an interactive introduction and modifications to the story. The auditorium lighting will also be kept on throughout the performance,
