Skye beats the Eiffel Tower for online photos

It has revealed that the Isle of Skye is the most Instagrammed road trip destination in Europe, with almost 21,000 posts.

The picturesque island has triumphed over the likes of the iconic Eiffel Tower, which has 12,463 posts.

Scotland’s North Coast 500 also proved popular with social media users as it was ranked eighth in the list of the top 10 most popular road trip routes in Europe.

Scotland has proven popular with road trippers overall with #glencoe and #lochness also appearing in the top ten of #roadtrip posts, in fourth and eighth place respectively.

The full research findings have been plotted visually in an interactive map which showcases each road trip, destination and the possible routes that travellers can visit across Europe.

The results came from Europcar analysing a staggering 47 million social media posts to uncover the world’s road trip habits and most favoured travel destinations.

The United Kingdom placed third on the list of European locations, being beaten just by sunny France and its neighbouring Italy. 827,752 posts were taken in France compared with 754,614 in England, a 9% difference. The UK came in just after Italy, with a 5% variation in posts.
