People relaxing on a popular Scottish beach will be able to enjoy free high-speed wi-fi.
Visitors to Aberdeen Beach can now use the City Connect network to access the internext.
In 2016, Aberdeen City Council first introduced coverage in the city as part of its Being Digital programme
The latest roll-out takes in the area from the Beach Ballroom along the Beach Esplanade, the Lynx Ice Arena and Beach Leisure Centre, as well as extending the city centre network to include Rose Street and Thistle Street.
Aberdeen City Council co-leader Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: ‘We’re delighted to be further extending the network and allowing people to connect across the city and beyond.
‘Our investment in communications infrastructure means Aberdeen is fast becoming Scotland’s digital capital, adding to our global reputation as a technologically advanced city.’
The Being Digital programme first brought free public wi-fi to several regeneration areas in the north of the City including Northfield, Cummings Park, Woodside and Tillydrone.
Aberdeen City Council co-leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: ‘Digital technology can be used to improve opportunities for social inclusion, education and learning and employment opportunities.
‘Providing improved connectivity also benefits the Council as we look to modernise our organisation and give citizens an ever greater say and role in how we deliver services.’
Members of the public who have joined the network before will seamlessly connect to the services when they open their device browsers at the beach.
New users can easily register using their social media credentials or by completing a simple form.
As well as the beach, the roll-out adds Thistle Street and Rose Street to parts of the city centre already covered.
Adrian Watson, chief executive officer at Aberdeen Inspired, said: ‘Aberdeen Inspired were instrumental in bringing the earlier strands to the city centre and we are delighted to see this latest phase.
‘It’s an exciting development for the community at the west end of Union Street. This is a vital investment and a big boost for the city centre, Aberdeen Inspired are behind the wider drive towards becoming a digital city.’”
The project is being led by Aberdeen City Council and the wi-fi service provided by Pinacl Solutions.
