It will be all light on the night on Scottish mountains

A special charity fundraising involving Scottish mountains is returning this month.

The National Trust for Scotland has opened registrations for one of its most unique fundraising events, the Torchlight Challenge.

Taking place on Saturday 15 September, the Torchlight Challenge invites those with a passion for Scotland’s mountains to climb one of three of Scotland’s most iconic peaks at dusk – Ben Lomond, Goatfell, and new for 2018 Ben Lawers – all to raise essential funds for the conservation charity and local mountain rescue teams.

As the only event of its kind, the Torchlight Challenge sees each walkers at each location reach the summit of their chosen mountain to illuminate their torches and beacons to be seen by walkers across the other locations, and members of the public enjoying the majesty of our landscapes from below.

Alasdair Eckersall, senior ranger at Ben Lomond, said: ‘From the summit of each mountain you’ll be able to spot the lights shining from the other hills, creating a truly magical experience.

‘I would encourage anyone after a unique and magical experience to get involved in this event. Whether you’re a serious hiker or just enjoy being out in the Scottish countryside, it will be unforgettable.

‘Our love for Scotland is at the centre of everything we do, and this will help us quite literally shine a light on some of our amazing landscapes.’

Running since 2014, the National Trust for Scotland’s Torchlight Challenge has sold out every year, and with an additional 40 spaces available this year’s challenge is set to be the biggest and most memorable yet.

Registration costs £15 and includes a bespoke Torchlight Challenge t-shirt, refreshments and a guide on the night. The National Trust for Scotland asks a minimum sponsorship of £50 to be raised by every participant to help the National Trust for Scotland care for Scotland’s heritage and support local mountain rescue teams.
