Peacock Alley, in Edinburgh’s Caledonian Hotel is a great place to take afternoon tea, and to earn brownie points with Mum.
The Caledonian, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, has recently undergone a luxury re-launch following a £24 million investment and renovation. ‘The Caley’, as it is affectionately known by Edinburgh locals, is situated at the west end of Princes Street, this former Victorian railway hotel sits in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.
It was a freezing cold Sunday when I took my Mum and soon-to-be Mum-in-Law for afternoon tea in Peacock Alley. Having trawled around the gorgeous Vintage Wedding Show and done battle with pre-Christmas shoppers on Princes Street, we were badly in need of a nice cuppa and some sustenance. This central hub of the hotel is the former station concourse and ticket office. With a luxurious ambiance reminiscent of the old Caledonian and the Waldorf Astoria New York, Peacock Alley is a great spot for breakfast, afternoon tea, or evening drinks.
We settled into the over-sized armchairs and waited to see what delights would ensue. Afternoon tea did not disappoint. Delicate sandwiches, petite scones with jam and the thickest clotted cream and cute cakes made for a feast (almost) too pretty to eat. But, with pinkies held aloft we had soon almost cleared our cake stands. The staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and kindly boxed our left-over sweet treats in order that I could take them home to my family, slightly easing my guilt at leaving them to enjoy this particular Sunday spectacular.
Afternoon Tea is priced at £22 or if you’re feeling extravagant go for Champagne Afternoon Tea at £30.
