Leading luxury goods company Hamilton & Inches is set to join in Edinburgh’s seasonal celebrations with its ‘Festival of Silver’, offering a series of free public workshops with its master craftsmen.
The series of workshops with its master craftsmen are designed to give individuals an opportunity to learn about and try their hand at traditional silversmith crafts, including engraving, piercing and creating jewellery.
Silversmith David Ramsay will lead the first session on Tuesday 4 August. He began his career at Hamilton & Inches in 2007, polishing trophies for the Royal Highland Show, and later became the workshop’s first apprentice in recent history. David has created a number of sporting trophies, including replica Scottish Open Championship Quaichs awarded to the competition’s winners. He will be helping people to create a traditional planished finish.
Five further days of demonstrations will take place throughout August, where master smiths, engravers and jewellers will be showcasing their craft alongside silversmith apprentice, a master in the making. Under the direction of Technical Manager Jon Hunt they produce handmade pieces using time-honoured techniques from the workshops above Hamilton & Inches’ Edinburgh showroom, and work to ensure that the artistry of silversmithing flourishes for future generations.
Hamilton & Inches Technical Manager Jon Hunt said: “Silver is a remarkable material to work with, therefore the age-old skills that are used to manipulate it into beautiful pieces must be preserved, nurtured and cherished. We are fortunate that our team has both craftsmen with extensive industry experience, and new talent through our apprenticeship programme, all of whom work hard to keep the traditional crafts alive.”
With all of the festivities going on in the city, it is the perfect time to celebrate craftsmanship. Hamilton & Inches Managing Director Ross Haston said: “Edinburgh has been Hamilton & Inches’ home for almost 150 years. We are proud of our history here and we are keen to share the craftsmanship at work in our city with others, specifically at such a lively and celebratory time.”
The six ‘drop-in’ sessions will take place in Hamilton & Inches’ Edinburgh Showroom at 87 George Street from 9.30am – 5.30pm on the 4, 6, 11, 13, 18 and 20 of August.
