New Lanark World Heritage Site, is delighted to be appearing on BBC Countryfile on Sunday the 21 May 2017. BBC Countryfile’s presenter Sean Fletcher and a film crew visited New Lanark World Heritage Site last month to learn more about the 18th Century former cotton spinning mill village.
The Lanarkshire countryside is loved and admired around the world. Behind the stunning scenery and breath-taking views, there is so much to remember as the programme explores New Lanark World Heritage Site, a former 18th century cotton spinning mill village, founded by David Dale and Richard Arkwright in 1785. Located on the banks of the Falls of Clyde just under 1 hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh, it gained international fame under the enlightened management of Robert Owen and was a successful spinning centre until its closure in 1968. New Lanark village is now owned and operated by New Lanark Trust, a registered Scottish Charity (SC008552) who, since 1974, have been restoring and revitalising the village as a living and working site. Today it is recognised as one of Scotland’s 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of ‘outstanding universal value’ and welcomes over 300,000 visitors annually to the site.
Jane Masters, New Lanark Trust’s Heritage Manager, who took part in the filming, said “We’ve always known that what we are trying to do at New Lanark World Heritage Site is important, not just for local people and visitors from around the world but also by educating people about the amazing working conditions and social welfare, introduced by Robert Owen, years before its time,” she said. “This visit from Countryfile demonstrates the site’s significance while also giving us a welcome opportunity to talk to a national audience about how they can help protect and learn more about this this unique village.”
Visitors to New Lanark World Heritage Site historic village can enjoy a tour round the fascinating Visitor Attraction whilst enjoying a full day out with family-friendly dining in the New Lanark Mill Café and delicious meals served in the Mill One Restaurant. The New Lanark Mill Shop sells clothing and yarn produced by the mill as well as a range of stunning gifts, homeware and Scottish produce. The beautiful scenery with walks in the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve will allow you to drift back in time and imagine the village as it once was as a cotton spinning mill village. If visiting from afar, visitors can enjoy an overnight stay at the New Lanark Mill Hotel or Wee Row Hostel.
Countryfile, which broadcasts to an audience of up to 9.6m people, is aired on BBC One at 6:30pm on Sunday 21 May 2017.
