Scottish Field was at Archerfield Links near Gullane on Monday 7 July to witness two-time major winner Rory McIlroy officially open the world’s first state-of-the-art Nike Performance Fitting Centre. The opening of the first Nike facility of its kind anywhere in the world also drew in European Tour coach Gary Nicol and former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart from Dumfriesshire. A glorious day of East Lothian sunshine was capped off with a lavish dinner at which enthusiastic golfer and Westlife crooner Ronan Keating provided the star turn.
The idea of the centre is to allow club and casual golfers to experience the same level of quality game analysis usually reserved for the elite Tour professionals. It has also allowed Archerfield – which is within spitting distance of at least half a dozen of the country’s finest courses, including Open Championship venue Muirfield – to firmly establish itself at golf’s top table.
The centre allows golfers to have clubs custom-fitted at Archerfield, a venue chosen by Nike for its top-quality environment and proximity to both the concentration of East Lothian courses and Edinburgh Airport. McIlroy spent three hours demonstrating how the high-tech equipment at the centre could analyse golfer’s swings, explaining how custom-fitting clubs could improve casual golfers’ scores. The lack of custom-fitting certainly ensured that this golfer’s game was as rubbish as ever, notwithstanding the perfect conditions on the Fidra Course.
‘It was great to be part of the launch event and it’s brilliant to see all of the hard work the teams at Nike Golf and Archerfield have put in come to fruition,’ said McIlroy. ‘I see so many golfers who play in Pro-Ams who are playing equipment that just isn’t suited to their game and some guys don’t even know how far they hit each club. They would improve their performance after going through the ultimate fitting experience from the team here at Archerfield.’
Set 20 minutes outside Edinburgh, Archerfield is a well renowned golfing centre, with two beautiful courses designed by DJ Russell, while its recently renovated 17th century mansion house includes a spa which was recently voted in the top six new spas in Europe. With a range of accommodation, Archerfield provides an excellent golfing experience.
