Record number of Hogmanay weddings set for Gretna

Tomorrow, 31 December 2019, will see the highest number of civil marriages conducted in venues across the Gretna and Gretna Green area on Hogmanay.

There are 59 weddings in total being held, which is the highest number recorded since Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Registration Office opened in Central Avenue in September 1991.

Analysis of marriage statistics shows that even in times of decline, both Gretna and Dumfries and Galloway have retained their market share of all the marriages taking place in Scotland.

Preliminary figures show an increase in weddings in Gretna during 2019 compared with 2018 with an average of 80% of all weddings in Dumfries and Galloway taking place in the Gretna area.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, chairman of communities committee said: ‘The Gretna area consistently retains a 12% market share of all weddings that take place in Scotland and we are delighted couples have chosen our town to be married on such a significant day.

‘Gretna and Gretna Green is a wonderful place to be married and couples love the tradition and romance associated with being married here.’

Councillor John Martin, vice chairman of communities committee, added: ‘Gretna and Gretna Green in Dumfries and Galloway is possibly the most romantic place in Scotland with couples choosing to be married here.

‘Our small Scottish town is synonymous with romance and weddings. Hogmanay is one of our busier days during the winter months second only to St Valentine’s Day.’
