Aysgarth School leads the way on the educational journey

Aysgarth School is one of the leading Prep schools in the country, where ‘boys can be boys’.

As the only all-boys boarding Prep school in the north of Britain, based near Bedale, North Yorkshire, Aysgarth sends more boys to selective schools such as Eton and Harrow than any other school in the north, as well as to senior schools nearby.

It is a northern school with a national focus; the school is full boarding focused, with around 90% of boys boarding.

Its academic performance is excellent and this is matched by the success of the sporting, musical, dramatic and artistic departments. The activities programme is vast and the boys work hard and have a great deal of fun.

Boarders are required to take responsibility for their actions and choices and, because parents aren’t there to shield them, the children will experience both success and failure in a controlled environment.

They are given the opportunity to manage their own lives and, as such, become stronger individuals, capable of leadership and initiative. They learn how to live and deal with each other for extended periods and this challenges them to develop their interpersonal skills: day pupils are simply not challenged in the same way.

When asked, in their most recent pupil survey ‘What do you like best about the school?’ the most common answer was boarding! Academics are of course paramount, but when children look back on their education they are more likely to remember their friends and their escapades rather than their lessons.

Boarding school teachers work with the children in and out of the classroom, share meals with them and often live on site.

There is much truth in the old adage that ‘one wins the battle outside of the classroom’ and being able to congratulate a boy on his sporting performance on Saturday or on his singing in the Chapel on Sunday, helps develop his self-confidence as well as ensuring that he is more focused in your lesson.

Furthermore the time that day children spend commuting is actually put to use; the longer day affords the opportunity to extend academic lessons and to extend the extracurricular provision; in short to offer the children the opportunity to make enhanced progress and to have more fun!
