In 1796 Peter Spiers, the son of a wealthy Glasgow merchant, bought the castle and estate and he built the adjacent cotton mill, Culcreuch Mill. There is an unusual small stone building next to The Mill House which is known as ‘the Time Keeper’s Bothy’. Internally the building has the remains of a fireplace, which the Time Keeper would have used to keep warm, and a passageway along one side with the remains of an interconnecting hatch. The Mill employees would pass through the passage of the Time Keeper’s Bothy to clock in and out at the hatch in the days when the Mill was operational.
