A modernised mill with links to Robert Burns

An Ayrshire mill house with a historic connection to Robert Burns is now on the market.

Galbraith  is pleased to bring to the market Willies Mill, in an idyllic Ayrshire setting, with excellent equestrian facilities.
The property has been extended and modernised in recent years and is now a very attractive, characterful family home. There is the potential to create ancillary accommodation for a granny flat or home office space in the adjoining outbuildings if required.

The house sits in about 4.1 acres of grounds divided into landscaped gardens and six paddocks, ideal for grazing horses or livestock.

The property is surrounded by the rolling countryside of Ayrshire and is bounded by the Water of Fail to the north. There are useful outbuildings including a stable yard with three looseboxes, large tack room, workshop, hay barn, field shelter and a wood store.

Fiona Fulton, who is handling the sale of the property for Galbraith, said: ‘Willies Mill is a splendid property offering a winning combination of attributes for a wide range of purchasers.

‘The setting is peaceful and scenic, the property has a good amount of land for those with horses, and useful stabling. The interior accommodation is very spacious and has been modernised to a very good standard while retaining its period charm.

‘There is also the potential to create a granny flat or home office. Added to all of that, the house is within easy commuting distance of Glasgow or Ayr.’

Willies Mill has strong Burns connections as the former owner, William Muir, featured in Burns’ poem Death and Doctor Hornbrook and was also a close friend of the Burns family. William Muir took in Jean Armour when she discovered that she was pregnant to Robert Burns for the second time. Burns wrote an epitaph on William Muir in his second commonplace book.

Families will appreciate the spacious interior accommodation including two sitting rooms, four bedrooms, spacious and well-appointed dining kitchen with separate larder and utility room, and attractive features such as a wood burning stove, high ceilings in many rooms and exposed wood beams.

The attractive south facing garden with patio area and the original slate roof tiles add to the charm of the property.

The nearby Water of Fail is a popular fishing spot, joining the River Ayr at Failford. The village of Tarbolton, less than a mile from the house, offers amenities including a primary school, pub, post office and other shops.

Willies Mill is currently for sale for offers over £430,000.
