Summer’s here so try our strawberry recipe

The new Scottish strawberry season is almost upon us.

It’s arrival may be a little later than usual thanks to the remarkably cold start to the year, but with the warm days we’ve been enjoying of late we’re on course for a fantastic season.

Scottish strawberries are famously some of the best in the world, and this year true strawberry connoisseurs should look out for the deliciously sweet and juicy AVA varieties, grown by an exclusive group of growers in the ideal climes of the North-East of Scotland.

From this week, three AVA varieties, AVA Star, AVA Blush, and AVA Rosa, will be readily available in the premium lines at Morrisons, Aldi, Coop, and Sainsburys across the UK.

Packed with vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, strawberries are a sodium-free, low-fat, low-calorie berry. A 100g serving of strawberries contains only 30 calories and 0.5g of fat, which means that you can keep piling these red delights onto your morning granola this summer guilt free.

The North-East of Scotland has the ideal climate for growing the perfect strawberry; warm days and cool nights. The three AVA strawberry varieties have been specially developed for improved flavour, appearance, shelf life, disease resistance and yield by the in-house breeding programme of premium berry grower and distributor Angus Soft Fruits.

While best enjoyed straight from the plant, strawberries are an extraordinarily versatile berry and make the perfect ingredient in both sweet and savoury dishes.
