In 1958 a rare blend of Scotch Malt and Grain Whiskies was discovered in 10 oak casks in Leith, Edinburgh in a warehouse owned by William Muir (Bond 9) Limited (Founded in 1823). The Directors arranged to have the whisky bottled to share with a group of friends which then became known as The Syndicate.
The Syndicate blend contains 18 Single Malt Whiskies and four Single Grain Whiskies. The quality and consistency of the blend has been maintained over the years by operating a ‘Solera’ system whereby when additional 12 Year Old whiskies are added they are reblended with the older stock. Thus the Syndicate blend still contains small quantities of the original 1958 blend. It is finally matured and married in Oloroso Sherry Casks which gives it an exceptionally smooth taste on the palate.
Master Blender Richard Patterson describes in his tasting notes;
Nuances of Seville orange, bergamot and honeyed pear – warm on the nose with ginger and jasmine. Rich and intense flavours of Dundee marmalade, glazed apple and caramel combine with a gentle whisper of forest fruits and treacle in this hedonistic harmony
The Syndicate’s Blended Scotch Whisky won a Gold award at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2013, and followed it up with the Gold Outstanding award in 2014.
