The legend of the Selkie inspires a new dram

The second whisky in Cask 88’s award-winning Scottish Folklore Series of single cask bottlings is now available.

Edinburgh-based whisky broker and independent bottler Cask 88 were inspired by legends of Scottish folklore to be a 22 Year Old Arran 1997 Single Malt represented by the capricious Selkie.

Long feared by fishermen and island dwellers, Selkies shed their skin to change from seal to human form, and will seek human lovers to drag to the ocean’s depths, according to legend. Only 183 bottles will be available.

The first in the series was a 45 Year Old Ben Nevis 1972 Single Malt (£650 RRP): Cù-Sìth, which picked up gold medals at the 2018 International Wine and Spirits Competition in the Highland Single Malt 30-45 Year Old category and the Design and Media Awards category, and a gold medal at the 2018 Independent Bottlers Challenge.

The Highland single malt featured a design inspired by the Cù-Sìth, a terrifying large hound, with a murderous bark, said to stalk the Highlands of Scotland.

Intended to bond the stories of Scotland’s unique history with the very finest expressions of its spirit, the Cask 88 Scottish Folklore series will consist of six unique, single cask expressions, each featuring a mythical beast who has roamed the Highlands, stalked the lowlands or inhibited the islands.

Cask 88 director Patrick Costello said: ‘We’re thrilled to offer such a remarkable single malt as the second in this already acclaimed series.

‘I’ve never seen an Arran whisky so dark; it displays fantastic maturity and colour for a whisky of its age. We’re thankful that the Selkies haven’t chosen to steal this special liquid for themselves.’

The 22 Year Old Arran 1997 Single Malt: Selkie from the Cask 88 Scottish Folklore Series is available to purchase through the Cask 88 website cask88.com and from WhiskyFoundation.com for worldwide delivery, and in person from Cask 88 Sales Managers globally, priced £200.

Only 183 bottles are available.
