The Golden Dram is given a fine wine finish

John Dewar & Sons unveils its latest expression from The Golden Dram – Aberfeldy 15 Years Old, finished in French wine casks from Pomerol, Bordeaux.

The finest quality red wine casks from Pomerol were selected to finish the new limited-edition expression, ensuring that the wood complements and elevates Aberfeldy’s distillery character, not mask it.

Initially spending 15 years in a combination of Bourbon re-fill and re-char casks, the whisky has undergone a second maturation period of around 4-5 months, adding an extra dimension of flavour.

Malt Master, Stephanie MacLeod carefully monitored maturation and flavour development within each cask until the desired flavours had been achieved.

Stephanie said: ‘Pomerol intensifies Aberfeldy’s signature honeyed fruitiness with luscious layers of red berries and stone fruits.’

Wines from Pomerol are powerful and robust; the casks impart ripe fruit notes to Aberfeldy’s signature character, complementing the distillery’s honeyed notes and adding a further layer of flavour complexity.

Pomerol is the smallest of all the major Bordeaux wine producing appellations and home to some of the most expensive, sought after wines in the world.

The best vineyards are planted on a seam of blue clay which extends across the raised plateau of Pomerol itself and it’s the only wine producing region in the world with a large concentration of this clay in its soils. The wine is known for being refined yet intense, with sensual notes of violet, red berries, truffles, and game.

Built by the Dewar family in 1898, the distillery is one of a handful remaining in Perthshire. The house style is rich but smooth and accessible with an emphasis on notes of honey. A longer fermentation time of 70 hours allows for greater flavour development, encouraging the creation of more esters which in turn give the whisky fruitiness and its layers of honeyed richness.

Known as The Golden Dram, Aberfeldy’s precious water source, the Pitilie Burn, is steeped in local folklore and its qualities have long been sought-after. Pure and fresh the burn is renowned for its deposits of alluvial gold.

The newly released Aberfeldy 15 Years Old, bottled at a higher strength of 43% ABV, joins the existing portfolio of single malts as a limited-edition expression.

Priced at £55, the new expression will be available in the following markets: Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK.
