Show marks 80 years since end of Spanish Civil War

A commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War is taking place in Edinburgh.

Objectora presents What I Know (about what my Grandfather didn’t know) runs until 20 April – a new piece of visual storytelling using puppetry, object theatre, and live-projection.

Following work-in-progress showings at the Village Storytelling Festival (Glasgow, 2017), at the Scottish Storytelling Centre (Edinburgh, 2018) and at the Amsterdam Storytelling Festival (Amsterdam, 2018), the project culminates with its premiere at Assembly Roxy in Edinburgh as part of their 2019 Spring Programme.

Based on the true story of the great grandfather of Sònia Gardés, the artistic director of Objectora, the production takes its audience on a journey inside the Spanish Civil War and the pain her family still carries today.

Breaking the silence established three generations ago, Sònia dives into a sea of old photographs, interviews, memories, fantasies, expectations, frustration and answers that awake more questions, to ultimately celebrate lost youth and the path towards finding our own identity while pursued by the ghost of family expectations.

The show takes us into the depths of Sònia’s homeland, Spain, from rural Murcia to urban Barcelona, celebrating her roots and inviting the audience to dive into her world of loud voices and bright dry landscapes.

Described by audience members as ‘thought provoking’ and ‘a magical experience’, Sònia Gardés performs a show in which family trees, political involvement and its consequences, intergenerational trauma and lost youth are intertwined to build a story which is a cry for hope resonating with audiences internationally.
