Scotland prepares to celebrate its splendid heritage

Scotland is looking to its proud past, as it gears up for this year’s Heritage Awareness Day.

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is preparing for the return of Heritage Awareness Day on Thursday 20 September.

This year’s celebration, taking place in the European Year of Cultural Heritage, will celebrate historic connections between Scotland and Europe, showcasing how Scotland’s historic environment has been shaped and influenced by Europe, from the prehistoric to the present.

The first Heritage Awareness Day, which took place in October last year, reached more than 1.2 million people throughout Scotland and beyond as communities came together to delve into the past, explore their heritage and celebrate the history on their doorsteps.

Community groups, schools and individuals are encouraged to share stories, photographs and videos, or even carry out their own research to uncover historic links with Europe.

To join in with the conversation on social media, use the hashtag #ScottishConnections on Twitter and Instagram.

To raise awareness of the event, ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ celebrated the return of Heritage Awareness Day as this week marks 457 years since she returned to Scotland from France.
