From funk and soul to Brit-pop and political punk, the braes of Balquhidder will echo with the beats of world class bands, international DJs and award-winning artists at Mhor festival later this month.
Now in its eighth year, the event brings together eclectic mix of international talent and reflects a spectrum of musical styles and sounds.
From the 24–26 May this highlight of the Scottish festival scene will feature everything from political punk to Balearic bliss, creating truly magical moments, unique to every visitor.
No stranger to the festival circuit, yet a fresh face for Mhor fans, Beans on Toast is one of this year’s highly anticipated headline acts. Born in Essex this cult folk figure has played Glastonbury and toured America with his frank and simple songs dealing, with politics, drugs and love.
In an era when poor mental health, particularly for men, is a huge concern, artists like Beans on Toast explore the less polished side of life, finding humour in the tough times and giving voice to those often ignored.
One of Liam Gallagher’s favourite bands are also on the bill this year at Mhor Festival.
First formed in 1987 by brothers Chris and Tony Griffiths, The Real People are the heart of the UK’s original Rock/Britpop scene and famed with helping Oasis record their first demo. As well as performing their own material, the brothers have also written top 40 hits for artists such as Cher, Ocean Colour Scene and Nylon.
Cementing the festival’s pulling power when it comes to international talent, the Saturday night will see DJ legend Andy Carroll return to the main stage for the second year in a row. Known for playing some of the most seminal nights at the world’s biggest clubs, Andy is a staunch Mhor Festival fan and this year will be bringing some of his infamous pals along for the ride.
One of these is Smokin’ Jo, a staple of the international DJ circuit since the birth of rave and club culture in the early 90s, who will appear against the backdrop of Loch Voil for the first time in 2019. The undisputed queen of the dance music scene, Jo’s task is to both kick things off on Sunday with a Dance Joga session and to close the weekend with one of her world acclaimed DJ sets. Guests are encouraged to join her on a journey delving into the deeper side of soul, house and techno.
Keeping the DJ stakes high is another name synonymous with the 90s. Jon Pleased Wimmin is a flamboyant, cross dressing, self-proclaimed music obsessive whose talent made him a regular fixture at clubs nationwide over the years and draws fans from every corner of the globe.
Another act making their Mhor Fest debut are SWJ Group, a collective who defy pigeonholing and are guaranteed to get you on the dancefloor. With Stephen Wilson Jnr on vocals and his musical mates in accompaniment, SWJ Group are committed to getting heads nodding, toes tapping and fingers clicking with their own funky, psychedelic sound.
Welcoming irreverent worship to Mhor Festival for the very first time, OH MY GOD it’s the Church will be baptising a legion of new fans when they storm the festival’s main stage on Friday 24 May. Now well established on the UK festival scene, having graced the stages of Glastonbury and Bestival, this international phenomenon combines live music, comedy and thrilling dance routines guaranteed to have the whole crowd dancing in the proverbial pews.
In 2019 Mhor Festival will continue with its tradition of supporting local, Scottish artists, from up and coming stars to established icons. Singer songwriter Carol Laula, arguably one of Scotland’s greatest exports, will add extra magic to the famous Friday Night Feast while cult indie newcomers, 100 Fables, will build on the success of their debut appearance at Mhor Festival in 2018.
Hailing from Inverness and returning to Mhor Festival for the second time, Dylan Tierney will be on hand, guitar at the ready, and representing the country’s musical prowess, Glaswegian crooner Dixie Lang, who’s recently released album Apple Tree features the With the creme de la creme of Glasgow’s country musicians, will bring a little bit of West Coast Nashville to festival goers.
Mhor Festival has always presented an eclectic line up of bands, DJs and performers from across the world, offering guests a truly unique blend of styles and sounds. Curated by festival founder Lisa Lewis and her husband Tom Lewis, Mhor Festival’s musical line up reflects their favourite feels, inspired as much by trips abroad as by the songs played over and over in the hotel kitchen.
From dance to funk with a dash of political punk and a whole load of soul, Mhor Festival promises two days of musical magic against the most breath-taking of backdrops.
