When you think of the word ‘Eurovision’, the high camp and drama of the song contest springs to mind, but there is a more refined side to the organisation as well.
This year’s Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 will see young artists from 18 countries taking part, as the competition comes to Scotland for the first time ever.
It is the 19th edition of the biennial competition, which sees the event return to the UK for the first time since its inaugural edition was held in Manchester in 1982.
The event at the Edinburgh International Festival begins with six semi-final recitals on August 18 and 19 at the Festival Theatre Studio.
All 18 candidates will perform and the concerts will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and streamed live on BBC Arts Digital.
Six Young Musicians will be selected to go forward to the final at the Usher Hall which will be shown on August 23 on BBC Two Scotland (available to watch across the UK on BBC iPlayer) , and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
The finalists will perform with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its internationally renowned chief conductor Thomas Dausgaard.
Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 is being presented by the Edinburgh International Festival, and the European Broadcasting Union, in conjunction with BBC Scotland, BBC Studios, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Arts Digital.
On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August, at 2pm, 4pm, 6pm the semi-finals will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and live-streamed on BBC Arts Digital.
The final will be broadcast on BBC Two Scotland on Thursday 23 August, at 8pm and on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 24 August at 2pm.
The finals will also be available on BBC iPlayer, and an additional feature on the winner and their performance will be available on BBC Arts Digital.
