Conductor to make BBC SSO debut this Christmas

Conductor, arranger and composer Gavin Sutherland will be making his BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducting debut in two fantastic concerts at Glasgow’s City Halls.

For Swingin’ Christmas on the 21 December, he will be joined by by jazz singer and broadcaster Clare Teal, in a sparkling, effervescent mix of Christmas classics and undiscovered gems alongside some finger-snapping arrangements of popular hits.

He also presents Christmas at the Movies on the 23 December, alongside singer and BBC Radio Scotland presenter Jamie MacDougall.

Alongside his popular and light music concert engagements, Gavin has been the Music Director of English National Ballet since 2008, and Principal Conductor of since 2010.

Gavin has also conducted at esteemed international cultural hubs including the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the New National Ballet of Japan.

In addition, Gavin has conducted at the BBC Proms and is a regular conductor for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night.

Gavin was appointed Music Director of English National Ballet in 2008, becoming Principal Conductor in 2010.

Most recently, Gavin orchestrated Vincenzo Lamagna’s score for the Olivier Award-winning Akram Khan’s Giselle for the company, which tours to Chicago in early 2019.

Previously, Gavin has featured as Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and has also guest conducted for New National Ballet of Japan, Norwegian National Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, New Adventures and South African Ballet Theatre.

In addition to his work as a conductor, Gavin regularly supplies the BBC orchestras, the Australian Philharmonic, New Zealand Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Scottish National, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Opera House, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Hallé Orchestras with bespoke orchestrated works.
