Today Byres Road and the adjoining Ashton Lane form the hub of Glasgow’s stylish West End, famous for being one of the most popular entertainment spots in the city.
Throughout the day and night, the restaurants, bars, cinema and nightclubs are jam-packed with visitors of all ages and nationalities. In summertime, they spill out onto the cobbled Ashton Lane, adding to the party atmosphere.
Yet this is a change that has come about relatively recently. For as little as 35 years ago when Ronnie Clydesdale first thought about opening a restaurant in Ashton Lane, the building he was looking at was almost derelict. There were also rumours that a road was going to plough right through, linking up with the university.
However, on further investigation, Ronnie was told that the council plans to build the spur route had been dropped due to the outcry that the motorway construction through the city had caused at that time. Thus he took a chance and spent all the money he had buying the
