Spectacular air display

If one is looking for an indication that summer has arrived in Scotland then it may not be evident from the vagaries of the Scottish weather.

However, one sure sign that the holiday season is upon us is the annual round of game fairs, country fairs and shows which abound from the borderlands of the south to the highlands.

These are events which draw families from the crofts, the farms, the mansions and castles and bring together all who have a common purpose in supporting the rural way of life which is under threat in so many ways.

Game Conservancy Scottish Fair

The start of the season is heralded with the Game Conservancy Scottish Fair which is held in the grounds of Scone Palace, near Perth, the ancestral home of the Earls of Mansfield from Friday 30th June to Sunday July 2nd.

It is indeed a signal year for the Game Conservancy Trust, which celebrates 75 years of game management and 25 years as a charity. The Fair attracts more than 30,000 visitors annually and has more than 300 stands, as well as displays and demonstrations, which include a packed food hall and craft tent.

Extending to three days has not diluted any of the planned activity and there is a full programme of events in the main ring as well as in the surrounding areas and on the river bank. This year will also witness new displays and activities.

The canine world plays a major part in the event. While a number of the gundog events are by invitation, entry for others is available to anyone who brings dogs to the Fair. New this year is the gun and dog competition, which
