Scotland's beaches - a favourite with tourists |
The best holidays in Scotland are not, as most tourists assume, spent among the lochs and glens. All that grandeur is great for passing through, but the most compelling destination of all is a stretch of sand, a beach sparkling in sunshine with waves rippling in from the ocean and skylarks twittering endlessly above the machair.
It’s probably because the archetypal concept of a Mediterranean beach holiday is so obviously inappropriate for Scotland that our beaches have such a grip on our wider imagination. Optimistically, you might pack a swimming costume, but holiday attire is a woolly jumper, shorts and wellie boots.
You come not with a paperback crime thriller but a bucket and spade, a kite, a fishing rod, a cricket bat and some midge repellant for later. It’s just as well that the weather isn’t really conducive to supine hours on a beach towel sunbathing, for who could afford to waste time doing that?
Donald Trump has unveiled his ambitious plans for a golf Mecca in the north-east of Scotland. These new golf destinations may be welcomed by the tourism industry, but are they good news for the Scottish game and the country as a whole?
