John Hugh Borthwick |
Crookston House, near the village of Heriot has been home to the present chief of the Clan Borthwick since 1999.
Educated at Gordonstoun, John Hugh Borthwick, DL, is the 24th Lord Borthwick of that ilk and has been running the family estates for a number of years. Since moving to Crookston, a large country mansion built in 1816, Lord and Lady Borthwick have embarked on a project of clearing the gardens and woodlands.
It is in this sphere that John Borthwick has found his passion as a lumberjack with lots of trees to be felled to give the house breathing space and to take advantage of the surrounding views. The Borthwicks work as a team with Lady Borthwick’s flair for developing, landscaping and reclaiming the garden dovetailing with her husband’s desire to provide winter fuel to keep the home fires burning on the Crookston Estate in Midlothian.
As the 24th chief of the clan, Lord Borthwick is keen to re-establish clan gatherings and when their current project is completed it is intended that a Borthwick gathering will take place at Crookston.
