For those who enjoy a great day out, mark the dates of 30th June - 2nd July in your diary. It is time once again for the Game Conservancy Scottish Fair held at Scone Palace, near Perth.
The Fair, this year under new directorship, promises to be another success - despite the event being in its 13th year! Attracting more than 32,000 visitors last year, it is a highlight in Scotland’s rural, social and conservation calendar.
The event is a great day out for all ages, with the welcome return of the Red Arrows display team overhead on Saturday, the Land Rover 4 x 4 off-road adventure sponsored by Rossleigh, and the main ring playing host to an action-packed programme of events. These include pipe bands, falconry, sheepdog displays, the keenly contested factors versus farmers’ tug o’ war and the impressive Royal Marines unarmed combat team.
As well as a fun day out, visitors will also have the chance to learn more about the Scottish countryside, wildlife and game, land management techniques and traditional skills such as dry stane dyking, stick making and basket weaving. Numerous country organisations and associations will be represented, and every type of rural interest - gunsmiths, fishing tackle, taxidermy and falconry, to name but a few.
The aims of the Game Conservancy Trust, the Fair’s organisers, are to demonstrate the importance of game and its contribution to the Scottish countryside, educate members of the public of all ages and raise funds for further research into Scotland’s game and other wildlife. The central GCT stand itself hosts live exhibits of upland species as well as game and wildlife displays with advisors on hand to answer any queries on rural issues.
Around the Fair site, more than 300 trade stands promote a wealth of products and activities, and there is plenty opportunity to sample and buy quality Scottish produce.
