Dawn of the dammedCastor fiber, the European beaver, is thought to have once inhabited an area stretching from Scotland to Siberia. From the Middle Ages, however, the animals appeared to be in terminal decline, as humans exploited them for their fur and their flesh. But since the 1920s they have been successfully reintroduced into over a dozen European countries and are now thriving once more.
